Just this week I was wondering if Chiddy Bang was going to be my song of the spring. (It would have been last summer’s song, but Passion Pit took over.) Then the Childish Gambino EP that I got last week popped on to my iPhone.
I’m completely hooked on Freaks and Geeks. Here be the video …
You need a few listens to catch all the genius lines. If you think he looks familiar. It’s Donald Glover. He’s on Community. You should watch Community. Thursday TV is still the best, if you skip Outsourced and whatever that terrible Couples show is.

When I was looking for links to Chiddy Bang and Passion Pit posts, I found that they were my two Summer Soundtrack posts from last year. I named Passion Pit Track 1 almost exactly a year ago. So I guess naming summer tracks is already allowed. So I’ll put Freaks and Geeks as Track 1. Maybe this year there will be more than 3 tracks. Or maybe this will be the only one.
Panic! at the Disco dropped the ! for their last album and when I would have to review that album to friends, there was no other description than that it was lacking some !.
Maybe the ! has been back for a while, but this is the first I’m hearing about it. Check their site.

Stuck in my head all weekend (good thing it’s good) … As for the video, not sure what’s up with the zombies …
The cowbell is so odd at the beginning though. It’s all I hear and so out of place.
Oddly, I’m not much of a fan of 90s on 9 on Sirius. There is enough on there I don’t like that keeps me from leaving it on for more than a song or two. Tonight, they pulled out some Eagle Eye Cherry, and it had been too long. They followed it up with Vanilla Ice, but I couldn’t take that.
I Call Fives songs keep coming up on my iPhone. Not that I’m complaining. I think you’ll enjoy this one that came on during my walk to class this morning. (It was right after some Chiddy Bang, so yea, good morning.)
I should probably go with something that came out today, but I haven’t listened to anything yet. I bought The Gaslight Anthem and am tempted by The Ready Set. Instead, I caught a live version of All Time Low’s Coffee Shop Soundtrack. I found the video on YouTube and you have to love it for its ability to look like it was made in 1985.
My Summer Soundtrack is off to a slow start. I figure there should be a few tracks on it before Memorial Day. Here are two more tracks, bringing my total to three.
This one first caught my attention with a few of the ridiculous lyrics. It hooked me with the MGMT beat.
Will probably settle toward the bottom of the Summer Soundtrack but I have a feeling it will be played a million times.
The Something Corporate Greatest Hits album is out today. I’m not usually a fan of Greatest Hits, I think there needs to be a minimum number of releases. I think they’ve had 3 full lengths and an EP. At least, that’s what I have. If you include Jack’s Mannequin, they you have enough.
Not saying I don’t still love SoCo. I didn’t go through and make my own Greatest Hits like I did for Blink and Fall Out Boy. You can’t even ask me to pick a favorite. Ok, maybe you can, and it would obviously be Konstantine. But after that, it’s a log jam of songs. I have to pick a song to post, and Konstantine will fill your day (and if you know me, has likely filled a few). I’m going with Watch the Sky because it might be my next favorite, and it’s not the most common. I’m not even sure it was released before this album. (Looked it up, it was a British bonus on North).
This is my upbeat song to start the week. Seems like a lot of these kids are just solo acts and just find a band to preform. I don’t mind, just seems like there are a lot of them and they have a band name rather than just using their name.
The video was a little odd, no? It said Pete Wentz was in it (no surprise, the band is signed to Decaydance). Maybe he was one of the creepy hoodie guys with the eyes.
My first entry into the summer soundtrack. Tell me you aren’t hooked right away. I’ll forgive you if you are turned off by the lyrics at first, but I think they’ll grow on you. They still haven’t fully grown on me.
I think the first Lady Gaga song I heard was Just Dance. I’m usually not a fan of pop like that, since so much of it is the exact same regurgitated stuff in a different package, I figured she would be no exception.
Then I noticed a lot of people, who wouldn’t normally be into that sorta thing really liking her.
Then I saw this video of what happened when she had a soundboard failure and gained a whole new level of respect for her. One of the things that drives me nuts about popular music these days is it has completely lost the ‘show must go on’ attitude, I need not mention all the lip singing scandals in recent years. When they tried to pull her off the stage she said, “I promised them a 30 minute set, and I’m not stopping.” That is awesome, more artists should follow her example. It’s good to see a popular artist that really understands this.
Then I saw this video of a performance before she became Lady Gaga. You can’t ignore that talent. She knows how to play and man she can sing. That video knocked me over. In a same respect this is a more recent video with an acoustic performance of Poker Face.
And most recent was this video with Elton John at the Grammy awards. It’s fantastic and I can’t in any fair mind call it anything else.
The evidence of her talent is overwhelming, you just can’t ignore it. But I can’t get into her normal pop style. It’s just not the kinda thing that sounds good to me. I feel like she isn’t playing what’s right for her… but I guess she wouldn’t get the audiences she does if she did anything else.
I guess I’ll remain a fan of her side stuff, because it is fantastic.
