ESPN Mag: The Lion

Mike No Comment

1120PSU1This week’s ESPN The Magazine had a story on the Nittany Lion (I think you need Insider). It was about mascots in general, but the focus was on The Lion. This was the lead picture for the story.

Fun fact about the orgin of mascots:

In the late 1800s, composer Edmond Audran wrote a popular operetta called La Mascotte about a virgin farm girl who brought good luck as long as she, ahem, remained a virgin. Translated into The Mascot when it arrived in the States, in 1882, “it established the idea of a mascot as a person or animal bringing good luck,” says Roy Yarbrough, director of sport management studies at California University of Pennsylvania.

My Pleasure

Mike No Comment

A few months ago I went to Chick-Fil-A and noticed that every time that I said, ‘Thank You’, they responded with ‘My Pleasure’. I hadn’t even gone in, this was just from the drive-thru.

I say Thank You a bunch when I’m at fast food restaurants. Probably because I figure the people don’t want to be there and I want them to know I appreciate the effort. I say it as in, ‘I have no problem getting everything together myself, really, I’ll jump over the counter and pick out everything I need, no problem. I’m just happy you are there to do it for me.’

Something about the My Pleasure caught my ear though. I’m not used to hearing that. I’ll take a You’re Welcome, or even a Yep. My Pleasure stuck out, and everyone did it. On the intercom. Paying. Getting my food. It happened again the next time I went too. I had a few theories. That it was just this one store’s manager was my first guess. Maybe it was corporate and all the stores did it. The Chick-Fil-A owners are pretty religious (I assume because there is no other reason to be closed on Sundays), maybe they decide to stress friendliness.

I mentioned this to my family, as I do many of my stupid observations. Just think about this one. If your sibling told you this story, would you even continue to listen the whole way through, let alone think about it later?

This weekend, I got a txt from my sister saying she went to a Chick-Fil-A in North Carolina and they said My Pleasure 5 times. Meaning that 1) this has to be some corporate thing and 2) my sister says thank you as often as I do.

I’m not even sure where it came from but in the middle of the day today I got this Eminem song in my head. I haven’t even heard he song very much. The last time I heard it was probably last week. I don’t even really know the words. By the end of the day I remembered the song getting stuck in my head but I couldn’t even remember the beat. Odd.

Who to blame: Hulu or Sirius?

Mike No Comment

Watching some stuff on Hulu this afternoon and every ad is for Sirius. Every ad. The exact same one every time. I’m not sure if Hulu just can’t get enough advertisers or Sirius’ plan is to shove the campaign down my throat. If that’s the plan, at least have some variety. Different song. Focus one of them on Stern. I don’t care. Something different. I already have Sirius, so please just don’t drive me crazy.

Late Night Palin Compilation

Mike, TV No Comment

There was so much goodness on the late night shows on the release of the Palin book it would have been too much to post them all. Thankfully, Countdown did a decent job of collecting as many as they can. Still, you should have watched Daily Show/Colbert all week.

Stupid Human Tricks

Mike, TV No Comment

If I see any sort of Stupid Tricks on Letterman, I’m likely to share. Here we go 2 out of 3 on, let’s say the trick experience. I don’t know how they didn’t close with the pogo stick/violin. The keg flip wasn’t anything special but I enjoyed Dave’s interaction with the kid.

That doesn’t look right

I was away for the week, so a lot of stuff was on my DVR when I returned home, but not this much. I didn’t even know it could hold that much.

Actually, there is only 1 hour of HD on there. Before I left, I set most things to record in SD.

#1 – Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner (Acoustic)

This came out first on the acoustic EP. It was also on From Under the Cork Tree. Not nearly as good as the acoustic but still great.

I couldn’t find the right version anywhere. Google led me to this German site, no idea if this is the correct embed code. I’m not fluent in German.

So wear me like a locket around your throat.
I’ll weigh you down.

#2 – Sugar, We’re Going Down

The song that hit it big. All my friends knew how much I liked Fall Out Boy and were aware of some of their music. When this song blew up they all thought of me whenever they heard the song.

I’m just a notch in your bedpost but you’re just a line in a song.

#3 – Homesick at Space Camp

The first Fall Out Boy song I ever heard. Can you say love at first listen? I think it was a demo that I downloaded from AbsolutePunk. It was called Headphones. I was hooked.

Tonight the headphones will deliver you the words that I can’t say.

#4 – Of All the Gin Joints In All the World

The track before Sugar on From Under the Cork Tree sees a lot of fastballs. Meaning it has protection in the lineup. You wouldn’t really remember if it wasn’t very good. Turns out to be my 2nd favorite song on the album.
