Yea We Did
by Mike

I didn’t think it would ever happen. I definitely didn’t think the Phillies would do it first. After the rain and the suspended game I thought the curse was going to continue until we tore down all the skyscrapers. Now one of my teams has won a championship and I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to do with myself.

Last night looked like the Phillies team that I watched all year. The previous World Series games didn’t have that feel. I was nervous about our prospects going into last night. As the day went on I got more and more excited and talked myself into thinking we were absolutely going to win. After Jenkins scored that 1st run I knew it wasn’t going to be enough but I knew we could score off anyone last night. Madson quickly gave up the HR to Baldelli. Still, I had hope. I knew we could get another run. Burrell came up huge. If it was any warmer that ball would have gone out and everyone would have gone even more insane. I couldn’t have picked two better guys than Jenkins and Burrell to hit those doubles. Jenkins didn’t perform how he wanted all year and was disappointed he didn’t get more playing time. He was the ultimate team player in the playoffs. He was the first guy to congratulate a guy returning to the dugout. As for Burrell, after all the ups and downs of his career I’ve been a huge fan of his since the stretch run last year. That is when you could see something click. Not always in his on field performance, which continued to be hot and cold. It was in the way he handled himself. You could tell he cared and he wanted to win for himself and the fans. Besides Jamie Moyer, I don’t think anyone was more emotional than Burrell after the win. Then there is Lidge … How do these big games end in strikeouts? Lidge had flirted with disaster on occasion but you knew he wasn’t going to let us down last night. I don’t know how you keep your cool in that situation.

I was upset along with everyone else about how baseball handled the rain on Monday. First I was angry at the rain. I wanted the win to come on my birthday. Technically it may be recorded as a win on Monday. The fans showed up for the completion of the game, the people that were there more than made up for the 1,000 or so that didn’t come back to see the end. After it got going, you really didn’t noticed that the first 6 innings had been played 2 days before. It was also perfect for the fans everywhere. The game ended before 10. The 2 and a half hour post game show ended at 12:30am.

Will this give me the thirst for more or will I not be as stressed by every move the Phillies make? I won’t know the answer to that until next year. My teams have never won anything. I think next year I’ll still be yelling at Howard for striking out or a dumb move by Manual. Then I’ll remember last night and today. This high will eventually wear off if it takes another 28 years. Hopefully some of the other teams can pick up the slack.

After the game Cholly was asked about his mom being gone and so many people had stories about a parent or family member passing away in the past few years and how they wished they were here to see this win. Sunday marked 10 years since my grandfather died. I remember the date because it was the day before my 16th birthday. You can either become a fan of Philly sports or you are born with a gene that makes you a fan, no matter what happens, no matter how terrible things get. I got that gene from my grandfather. Pop Pop would have been so happy that the bums finally won the World Series again.

Now it’s time to start shopping for championship gear. First on the list is the SI package. I’ve waited my entire life to order the SI Championship package. I need a hat and some shirts. I’ll need the DVDs of the games. A World Series Program. And about 50 other items.

College Football Week 10 Preview
by Mike

Wisconsin @ Michigan State, Saturday 12:00pm
Ahad: Wisconsin has had a very disappointing season. With Beckum out with a busted leg, this team lost a huge part of the passing attack. Ringer will get a ton of carries and lead the Spartans to victory. Pick: MSU
Mike: Wisconsin has had it rough. That Michigan loss sent them into a downward spiral. As much as I’m pulling for Wisconsin to get it together, I don’t think it will happen. Pick: Michigan State
Matt: Wisconsin has been one of the more disappointing teams this season, but they were able to beat Illinois (which, by my estimation, is another underachieving team) last week, so maybe they have righted the ship. I think it will be a closer game than most expect, but I think Ringer and MSU will run all over Wisconsin and control the clock and the game at home. Pick: Michigan State
Evan: Wisconsin has been so bad that I think they play this week with nothing to lose. They have talent but have severely underachieved. Michigan State is good, but has no defense. Pick: Wisconsin

Florida State @ Georgia Tech, Saturday 3:30pm
Ahad: Who would have thought that Florida State would have this good a season? I have never heard of a team not attempting a single pass in a game. G-Tech runs a gimmick offense that shouldn’t cause much trouble for the Florida State defense. I will be rooting for G-Tech but my pick is FSU.
Mike: I don’t think you can be all that shocked about a good year from Florida State. They always get the recruits. They still have Bowden. And they play in the ACC. Georgia Tech is an odd team. Every game they play looks close. Even the 10-7 win over Gardner-Webb. I still can’t get over that score. Pick: Florida State
Matt: I still can’t over the fact Ga. Tech even played Gardner-Webb. It would seem Florida State has the edge in talent and record, but I still can’t root for or pick them to win. Ga. Tech only loses to teams from Virginia. Pick: Georgia Tech
Evan: At this point I need FSU to get every win it can so we can trounce them at 10-1 at the end of the year. I think they have finally found an identity on offense. Pick: FSU

Florida vs Georgia (in Jacksonville), Saturday 3:30pm
Ahad: This should be an amazing game. Correct me if I am wrong, but the winner of this game will be going to SEC Championship game. I think this game will come down to which QB doesn’t make the big mistake. Tebow clearly is the better QB in this matchup. Plus I hate the fact that Georgia has about 37 guys that wear the “C” on their jersey. That always bothered me. Pick: Gators
Mike: Florida. Florida. Florida. They’ve been waiting for this game since last year. I hope Meyer keeps his guys under control and takes their aggression out on the scoreboard. What Georgia did on that field last year was a disgrace . This Gator offense is just clicking. Pick: Florida
Matt: Hard game to call, and it will be a doozy. Florida has been very impressive the past few weeks following their lone defeat. Georgia has just been ok these past few weeks, but they were able to beat LSU at their home venue, but the defense will need to be better to pull out this win. The revenge factor favors Florida. Pick: Florida
Evan: UF is so pissed off about what Georgia did last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the video of the Bulldogs celebrating in the end zone was looping in the Gators weight room this week. UF’s offense has too many weapons and something tells me the Gator defensive backs will be laying some hits on some people. It’s been a while since I was this excited for a game. Pick: UF

Tennessee @ South Carolina, Saturday 7pm
Ahad: I don’t know too much about either team in this matchup. So I will just go with my gut instinct on this one. Pick: South Carolina
Mike: I’m with Ahad in my little knowledge about these teams. To me, it’s an interesting matchup that should be a fun game. These are 2 teams that can’t keep up with the elite teams of the SEC. I’m going to keep it simple and take the home team. Plus, they happen to be coming off a bye. Pick: South Carolina
Matt: I am in the same boat as you guys. I just know that South Carolina seems to hang in there with some of the tougher teams in the SEC while Tennessee normally has been getting beat handily. Pick: South Carolina
Evan: Fatty Phil has always had problems with Spurrier. I think the Gamecocks put a final nail in the coffin of disgrace that is the Tennessee Football season. Pick: South Carolina

Texas @ Texas Tech, Saturday 8pm
Ahad: The marquee matchup of the week, Texas goes into Lubbock against a very talented (at least offensively) Red Raiders team. This will be Gameday’s first trip to Lubbock. I just don’t think that Texas Tech is strong enough on defense to stop Texas. They should be able to score to keep the game close, but in the end the Longhorns will come out on top. Pick: Texas
Mike: If Texas Tech has a prolific running attack as opposed to their passing game, I think I’d have to pick them. Oklahoma seemed to run at will against Texas in the 2nd half. Pick: Texas
Matt: Is this the game Texas finally loses? Texas Tech will just have to plain outscore Texas or get some takeaways on defense to have a chance in this game. Should be a great, entertaining game. Oh, what the hell, I will go with the upset. Pick: Texas Tech
Evan: What’s the over/under on this game? I’ll take the over. I really need Texas to lose (as do all you Penn Staters out there, so I’m gonna pick the longhorns in the hopes that it jinx’s them. Pick: Texas

Sherman Alexie on The Colbert Report
by Mike

One of the more enjoyable parts of The Colbert Report is when you can tell Stephen is really enjoying himself. Especially during interviews where a guest, who is not all that well known, keeps up with him and even gets him to laugh.

Tuesday night Sherman Alexie was on. He wrote a book called The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. They didn’t talk too much about the book. The author came loaded with jokes and was able to toss back whatever Stephen through at him.

NFL Week 8 Recap
by Mike

Falcons/Eagles
Mike: Matt Ryan looked good but the Eagles did a great job keeping him out of the end zone. The key play was the blown call by the ref on the punt where the Falcon never touched the ball. I was more shocked that the Eagles were actually able to score than the blown call in our favor. The blown call showed me something I had never thought about: Saving timeouts in case of a challenge. I didn’t hear anything after the game so I’m not sure if Mike Smith thought about it at all. This is just another example of how the NFL should copy college, the first being OT. A similar review policy would be great in the NFL. Especially with the NFL having more cameras and the funds to have more people looking at the plays in real time.
Ahad: The Eagles got very lucky in this game. Who knows what would have happened if they didn’t get that gift of a “muffed” punt. Coach Smith is partly to blame for not holding onto a timeout, but it never should have gotten that far. Matt Ryan played well at times and was able to handle the blitz effectively. I don’t think the NFL will ever adopt the college replay policy because the league will say that the games would be too long with too many replays.
Matt: I did not get to see this game, but that blown call was just awful. You can probably expect some replay rule changes in the offseason because of that play. Matt Ryan looked like he played well from the highlights I saw, but I am sure he was challenged by the Eagles D.
Evan: Also did not get to see this game. I also have not seen any highlights. I was sick all weekend, so cut me some slack. Here is my analysis - I like that the Eagles won, and what all of you guys said sounds good.

Giants/Steelers
Mike: The Steelers O-line can’t handle defensive fronts like the Giants and Eagles. Somehow they handle everyone else just fine. I’m curious over the next few weeks to see if everyone just ignored the Eagles gameplan and will now copy it or if it’s just the matchup problems those teams pose to the Steelers.
Ahad: The Steelers showed yet again that they have trouble with the blitz. I am not sure why more teams don’t use this strategy. Once Parker comes back, that will alleviate some of the pressure off the O-line. Right now, the team is trying to get by without him. The Giants continue to find ways to win and it is annoying to watch as an Eagles fan.
Matt: Missed this game as well, but it appeared Big Ben was under siege the entire game. Something else that would take the pressure off the Steelers offensive line would be Big Ben getting rid of the ball in a more timely fashion. He often holds onto the ball wayyy too long.
Evan: I did watch this game and was not impressed by either team. The Giants appear to be the most mediocre 1 loss team the NFL has seen in quite some time. A Giants-Titans Super Bowl might be the lowest rated one ever.

Who do you think is the best team in football right now?
Ahad: My vote has to go to the Titans. This team reminds me of the Ravens team that won the Super Bowl. This team relies on its defense and running game. The QB is basically asked to manage the game and not make mistakes and right now Collins is taking care of business. Didn’t everyone call him washed up years ago?
Matt: I think the Giants are the best team right now, as much as it pains me to say it. I like the Titans, too, but if they were to line up on a neutral field against the Giants, the Giants would come out with the win. They both have similar pressure defenses, but I think the Giants have just a little bit more offense.

Buccaneers/Cowboys
Matt: Season saving win right there, at least for now. The defense stepped up in a big way. They needed to because Brad “check down” Johnson certainly wasn’t getting the job done on offense. The Buccaneers are a good defensive team, but Johnson was just pathetic. The team just needs to hold down the fort one more game and then welcome the bye week.
Evan: I predicted this mostly because of the predictable unpredictability of the NFL. The Cowboys are still a good team without Romo, it just took them a week to figure out how to play without him, although there are plenty of teams better than the Bucs that would have taken them down last week.

What role should weather play in the postseason?
by Mike

I’ve been angry since last night about the disaster that was Game 5 and how baseball dropped the ball completely. Sadly, no one was surprised. After thinking through it all, I think there is one question that needs to be addressed this offseason about the entire postseason …

What role should weather play?

Just like the regular season
If it’s not raining, start the game. If it starts raining and conditions get too bad, rain delay. If the game gets called, its official, and a team is leading, they win. It’s how things work for the other 2,430 regular season games. Everyone is familiar with it.

Sure that isn’t any way to end a World Series, but shouldn’t the rules be followed? It would not be ideal for the players or the fans. When the game is called, would the players run back on the field and jump around?

I would not have been at all shocked if the Phillies got through the 6th inning leading 2-1, the game was called, and the Phillies given the win and the World Series. It was why I was so angry at Rollins that he didn’t make a play on Upton’s groundball, which would have been a routine play for him in decent weather. Just look at how things turned out. There is no predicting what they are going to do. They make their decisions first then come up with their reasoning, rather than the logical way of thinking about the problem.

Now with the game tied, the suspended game is actually following the rule. However the conditions were not any worse in the Top of the 6th vs the Bottom of the 6th. So the Rays had the advantage of the pitcher and fielders being severely handicapped. The Phillies now will play their half of the 6th on a dry field instead of getting the same advantages the Rays had in the top of the inning.

Special Rules for the Postseason
The thought would be that the games should be played in the best weather possible. If the forecast shows terrible weather, the game should be canceled in advance. The players should be put in a position to perform at their best so the champion can be decided. You also cannot risk a team losing a starting pitcher in a called game. In the postseason, the series are only a maximum 5 or 7 games long. During the regular season you can put up with these situations because they will even themselves out throughout the year.

The weather reports showed that things were not looking good going into the game. Baseball could have made a few simple decisions that might have helped things. The start time could have been moved up. Given enough time, moving the game up to 7 would have been logical. The fans would be alright with that, given a few hours notice. The people watching at home would have loved it, getting to bed before midnight would be a possibility. At the very least the MLB should have told Fox that first pitch was going to be at 8pm. It would be a simple conversation, ‘Fox, we’ve seen you’re pregame show. You wonder why your ratings are so bad? People tune in, see 10 seconds of your pregame show and are disgusted by how terrible it is and change the channel. So let’s just start the game when your coverage begins.’ (I can’t stress enough how terrible the Fox Pregame show is.) On top of that, make the commercial breaks regular length, not these extended breaks which are so long that I forget who is coming to bat. That would have likely gotten the game 2 innings further, at least. Still not finished, but it would make much more sense to suspend a game when the teams are already moving through their bullpens rather than changing the complexion of a game by taking the starting pitchers out of a game before they have finished their work for the night.

Having indefinite rain delays was introduced to the public yesterday after the game was stopped by Selig. These would go against the written rule, that games should only be suspended in the event of a tie. This, of course, would be for the good of the game. Apparently this was discussed beforehand, only very few people were told. My issue with this is that if it was already discussed, why did the game continue as long as it did? I can see pushing through the horrendous weather for a little while to get to an official game. However, if it has already been decided that, no matter what, the game will be picked up wherever it stops on a night when the weather clears up, then there is no problem at all stopping at the hint of the weather effecting the game. When did that happen? On the missed fly ball by Rollins. That was in the Top of the 5th. Now to make it official they could have pushed through to the end of that half inning. Then picked up with the Bottom of the 5th tomorrow.

My only guess as to why the 6th inning started was that Selig was not confident in his indefinite rain delay plan. He was praying for a tie so that people wouldn’t get upset about him making up rules. This is why he is a terrible commissioner, he has no power because he doesn’t command any. He is in charge. If he would have laid out his thought process with confidence and clear explanation, the support would vastly outweigh the opposition.

This entire thing was handled terribly by everyone involved. To me, there is no comparison between this and the All-Star Game tie. I had no problem with a tie in the All-Star Game. It’s an event to honor the players and entertain the fans. Who cares who wins? Where Selig screwed up there was that he overreacted and created his own problem. Then he made up rules to fix his make believe problem which took a lot of the fun out of the All-Star Game and gave home field advantage in the World Series based on something meaningless. I still say that homefield should go to the league that wins more interleague games. Last night, Selig blew it both before the game (by not calling it) and during the game (by waiting too long, even though he already decided that the game would continue in a few days, even if one team was leading in an offical game). It’s long past time for him to step down.

College Football Week 9 Recap
by Mike

Penn State/Ohio State
Mike: Unbelievable game. I don’t think I was alone thinking there would be more than 1 TD in the game. It seemed that Penn State was able to move the ball when they spread out Ohio State. Yet they still kept deciding to run the ball up the middle and not gain any ground. I read somewhere that JoePa yelled at JayPa for not spreading them out. I thought maybe it was Joe pushing the conservative play calling. How the running game opened up when Devlin came into the game, I have no idea. I think we had just worn down the defense as we’ve done in almost every game this year. Needing to bring in Devlin worried me because we gave up getting him meaningful minutes after the cupcakes were over. I pointed out numerous times when it would have been a good idea to bring him in. He really only was in there to hand the ball off. He threw 1 pass, but there was a pass interference call. So he didn’t even get his name into the passing stats. Then they run him on the QB sneak at the goaline? Did anyone realize Clark wasn’t in the game? The off week coming up for Penn State is huge. The team needs to focus for the last road game of the year, at Iowa. The Michigan State game to end the year still looms.
Matt: It was a really great game. I did think there would be more offense in the game, as my preview last week stated. I was upset at Royster a few times because he continued to run laterally and not turn upfield to gain much needed yardage. This happened on that screen play in the red zone on our first scoring drive, and it almost happened on the 3rd down run around the 5 yard line. Luckily, he was able to get the necessary yards. Do the refs know what holding is? Numerous times, Maybin, Gaines, and Evans were held, and blatantly I might add. What were the refs watching? Regardless, it was a well played game on both sides, and we were able to come out with the win. The Iowa game will be a tough one, but the bye week comes at the perfect time.
Ahad: This has to be one of the best games I have seen this year. Like everyone else, I expected more scoring. I think both teams went conservative with the play-calling trying to avoid making a costly mistake. I expected Ohio State to remain conservative with the play calling simply because the offense has been scaled back due to the true freshman QB. It was surprising to see PSU stay away from the spread. This was one area where I thought the offense would have success. How often do you see a center asking the QB how many fingers he is holding up? At that point, it was pretty clear that Clark was banged up. Devlin came in moved the team. Granted, he only attempted one pass; but he kept things going and got in the end zone. The defense did a great job containing Beanie and Pryor. The bye week will help the team recuperate from a physical game and get ready mentally for the last couple of games.
Evan: I actually really enjoyed this game. I felt that Penn State exorcised a lot of demons. I was utterly confused about what was going on with Darryl Clark and why he came out of the game. Kirk Herbstreit said if Penn State won that game then they are in the nat’l championship. I think people were saying similar things about West Virginia last year because all they had to do was beat Pitt at the end of the year. Michigan State looms large, and they’re much better than Pitt.

Matt on Gameday and Florida
What was everyone’s favorite Gameday sign? I can’t remember too many off the top of my head right now, but I liked the one that said, “I bought this beer from Ki-Jana Carter.” Kind of random. Probably would have been better if it said they bought it from Kerry Collins.

Florida looked very impressive against the top scoring defense in the SEC. Great game coming up between them and Georgia this week. Should be a shootout.

Ahad on Texas Tech
How about Texas Tech running the walk-on kicker out there? They found him during in-game field goal kicking contest last week. I guess their kickers must be terrible if this guy comes out of the stands and is the new kicker.

Evan headed to the Cocktail Party
I’m heading up to Jax for the FL/GA game, although will most likely not actually go to the game.  I’m very pumped up for this one, the winner should get into the BCS top 5, ahead of USC and Oklahoma, though I don’t know if that will happen.

Last Week’s Picks
Matt and I have big weeks, going 5-0. That tightens things up in this race. Ahad now leads with Matt only 3 games behind.

NFL Week 8 Preview
by Mike

Evan: I am moving to a mixed-use against my instincts pick strategy. Let’s see if anybody can figure it out. This will be very exciting.

Falcons @ Eagles, Sunday 1:00pm
Evan: Falcons have been overachieving, and they have been winning games they shouldn’t on paper. The Eagles should win this on paper, and they will. Pick: Eagles
Mike: I think the common analysis on this game is that the Eagles D will confuse Matt Ryan and the Eagles will win easily. Makes sense. I think if the Falcons win this game you learn that they are legit and the Eagles about as good as we thought they were. Pick: Eagles
Ahad: The Eagles record after a bye week speaks for itself. Andrews not playing doesn’t hurt them too much in this game. Pick: Eagles
Matt: Well the games aren’t played on paper, and I think the Falcons have a good chance in this game. They were able to go into Green Bay and come out with a win. If the Falcons can create running lanes for Turner, they could pull the upset. However, I think with an extra week to prepare, the Eagles win. Pick: Philly

Buccaneers @ Cowboys, 1:00pm
Evan: The sans-Romo Cowboys looked lost last week and the Bucs are a surprising 5-2. Instincts say Bucs but instincts also say that the Cowboys right the ship at home. Pick: Bucs, in OT
Mike: The Cowboys can’t possibly look as bad as they did last week, can they? Pick: Buccaneers
Ahad: The Cowboys are mess right now. There is a lot of talk going on about this team completely falling apart. Pick: Bucs
Matt: My team is in disarray right now, and they have a tough stretch coming up starting this weekend. The season can go down the drain pretty quickly if the team doesn’t come together and play better. They will need to be scrappy in this game and be the aggressor. I feel like the Bucs are lucky to be 5-2. Whichever defense plays better will determine the outcome. Pick: Buccaneers

Bills @ Dolphins, 1:00pm
Evan: I’m a Bills guy, always have been. If they make it to the Super Bowl, I’m getting a Trent Edwards jersey. Pick: Buffalo
Mike: Dolphins are not good. They got hot, beat the Pats and then beat the Chargers coming off a bye week. Everything else points to the fact that they are not good. Pick: Bills
Ahad: The Dolphins are playing better than a lot of people expected. The Bills have a legitimate shot at winning the division. Pick: Bills
Matt: The Dolphins should put up a good fight at home. Buffalo is clearly the better team, though. Pick: Buffalo

Giants @ Steelers, Sunday 4:15pm
Evan: I like the Steelers at home, especially if they can get ahead early and force Eli to throw the ball to catch up. Pick: Giants
Mike: Now here is an interesting game. The Steelers were a popular Super Bowl pick, then the Eagles D tore them apart, now they are a popular pick again. The Giants have a chance to duplicate what the Eagles did. Pick: Giants
Ahad: I don’t know which team I dislike more. All the talk that has been going on about the Ravens putting bounties on Mendenhall and Ward is probably the most exciting things going on for these teams. Even with their 5th string running back, I think the Steelers pull this one at home. Pick: Steelers
Matt: Good matchup of tough defenses and (generally) good running games. The Steelers keep winning games they really have no business winning. Somehow, Big Ben, after being sacked 10 times in a game, finds a way to make the plays that count. He will need to because he probably will be sacked that many times by the Giants front seven. This battle of 2004 first round picks at QB should make for a very good ballgame. I like Jeff Reed’s ability to kick at Heinz Field where opposing kickers seem to struggle. Pick: Steelers by a FG.

Colts @ Titans, Monday 8:30pm
Evan: I know nothing about the Titans, accept they are good. I feel like they are not even a real football team, what does a Titan have to do with Tennessee? It’s similar to my feelings on the Astros, which is kind of odd given the Houston-Tennessee connection. Pick: Colts
Mike: Last week, I thought the Colts were back. They would roll through the rest of their schedule. Then the Packers took care of them no sweat. The Titans have a chance on MNF to show Evan (except he’ll probably be watching the World Series) and everyone else why they are good. Pick: Titans
Ahad: If Kerry Collins isn’t still hung-over from celebrating the PSU victory over Ohio State, the Titans have a really good chance. The Colts looked as if they were starting to get things going, but after that performance against Green Bay, things don’t look so good. This is the Titans first national game of the season I believe. Granted, I will be watching the World Series but the Titans can prove something to the non-baseball fans out there. Pick: Titans
Matt: Is it time for a changing of the guard atop the AFC South? The Colts can’t stop the run very well, and the Titans run it better than anyone. Can Manning keep his team afloat? He will try, but it won’t get the job done. Pick: Titans

Most Important Teams
by Mike

I thought of it as if each team won a championship, which would I be most excited about. That works for me since none of these teams have won a championship since I’ve been aware of sports (only the Sixers and PSU have won since I was born).

1. Phillies
2. Penn State Football
3. Flyers
4. Eagles
5. Sixers

I already talked about the Phillies and why they top Penn State Football. The Flyers topping the Eagles might also be surprising to some, but again, less Eagles games make each one more exciting. For me, it doesn’t get much better than watching Flyers playoff games. The Sixers easily come in at 5. I pay attention to them all year, watch a few games. I watch all the playoff games. I just don’t get into them as much as the other Philly teams.
